Do you come with a dollop of mustard or ketchup? Dill pickle or onion rings? Do you come with fries on the side? How did you become a burger? Did your parents char grill you or did your society toss you between slices of a stale bun? I had heard of this term being dropped from time to time… burger kid…. burger family…
A label whose meaning was understood without any explanation; clarified by the sneer and holier then thou attitude that accompanied it! A derogatory implication understood all over Pakistan only varying with personal prejudice and complexes.
So what defines us? Our appearance or our private schools and collages? The food we prefer or the way we converse? Our family's income bracket or where we landed a job and you didn’t? It’s amusing that you assume that we don’t know Urdu because we just spoke in English. And that by speaking in English we are trying to prove to you that we are superior perhaps? Maybe that’s your handicap that you think English has an edge over our mother tongue!
It’s easy to be judgemental; to mock and slur another by calling them mummy daddy, yuppies, burger bacha etc. and while you stereotype and vent, all I have to say is that for someone who claims to be comfortable in their own skin, you guys sure do a lot of name calling!
What has happened here? Did you really think you were the sole guardians of the nation? That your experiences and exposure in politics have made you unchallengeable leaving no room for others? Or maybe it is the unexpected competition that this youth has given that is too much for the old thinkers and activists to take in? The fact that decent drawing room discussions have become roaring dharnas has become too challenging for the biased media gurus and the youth that have been supporting the corrupt political leaders of the past? Well I must say, for all your fine experiences, judgements and votes, you have made a fine mess of our country.
Where were we before? Right here actually…not hiding behind a playstation gaming hero or partying all night long like you want to believe. This league was just desperately and silently watching from a distance because we didn’t want to choose the lesser of two evils! And we were without a front…
So irrespective of where you come from or where you are going, please know that our life style and attire doesn’t make us any less sincere towards Pakistan then you and nor does it handicap our ability to think rationally and make a judgement call!
No politician is flawless, he is human! And no political party is perfect, but we refuse to repeat the mistakes of the past! We might not agree on every point and every policy of our party but we vote with awareness. We endorse Pakistan first and our chosen leader second, what about yourself? Are you willing to sacrifice your ego and let someone else take the reins or will you rather let the tried and infamous horse drag the carriage off the road again?
Truth be spoken, it doesn’t really matter who thinks what of the other as long as they keep their seemingly valuable opinion to themselves. What matters is tolerance with another’s point of view. Our political allegiance is a private preference and in the heat of the political morality I can see rage and fury sparking on both ends. Obscene language and ridiculous pictures are going viral on facebook to satisfy somebody’s rage and ego.
Time will be the best judge as to who is a better leader because that will affect each and every one of us…. So all these years while we sat back and watched you vote and vote again, support your leader and drag Pakistan into damaging coups - we didn’t say a word…. Its time for you to hold your tongue and do the same, watch and respect our choice!
We stand unwavering with Imran Khan and we who have ventured out of the comfort of our homes and the responsibilities of our workplace and have taken to roads, dharnas, jalsas and now lockdowns come rain or come shine.
We are being labelled and challenged because nobody knows what to do with our sudden persistence and interest in politics. Much to everybody's surprise we have weathered the sun, the rain, the thunder, the cold, the bullets, the beatings and we have emerged with a surge of unexpected events. The opposing parties are no longer muttering a countdown - theirs now is the baited breath!
