Wake Up and Smell the Revolution! By Momina Ali

Wake Up and Smell the Revolution

Azadi March 2014 - Some of us believed in it; some of us didn’t. Some of us were enraged that IK did not come out on the streets right after Elections 2013; some of us were disappointed that IK came out on the streets too soon. Some of us wanted PTI to work towards holding re-elections; some of us wanted PTI to only concentrate on KPK till the next elections. Some of us demanded accountability for our ‘lost’ votes; some of us fancied changing the system from within. But undoubtedly, ALL of us had something to say about Azadi March and it’s ‘colorful’ repercussions.

Needless to say, the power of media, particularly social media, is unparalleled. It has given the common man a voice that was unheard before. But as they say, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’! Let me rephrase this - with access to media and social media comes a moral responsibility. We, as a nation, are skeptical people! We are the first ones to formulate, vociferate and vehemently believe the most absurd ‘conspiracy theories’. We tend to gravitate towards the negative bias of any given situation. And of course, we enjoy criticizing just for the sake of criticism!

One of the most popular reasoning against Azadi March is that it will set a wrong precedent so people will come out on the streets anytime they fancy toppling the government. I understand and respect this thought-process but let me elaborate as to why it is deeply flawed.

This isn't the first time that people have come out on the streets. There have been numerous times when different political parties have given calls. N-league attacking Supreme Court is just a familiar example amongst many. They all created hype for a day or two and then died down. Most of them have been erased from our memories. Why? Because, THIS time… People are not out protesting because they are paid or ordered to do so; people are out protesting because of their own free will!

People are not out endangering their lives for change of government; people are out endangering their lives for change of system!

People are not out fighting for Imran Khan; people are out fighting for THEMSELVES! For their children! For Pakistan! And for Pakistanis!

How many times can a nation find a true leader; not just a politician but a leader who has the power to awaken and unite? How many times can a nation acquire the valor to stand up for its rights, for justice? How many times can a nation discover the motivation to end the tyranny, to end the slavery? How many times can a nation bring about a revolution?

Well my friends, if the nation is lucky enough, maybe just ONCE in many lifetimes!!

YES, it is a revolution in the making!

But lets not take my word for it. Actions always speak louder than words. The actions of my nation at Lahore, Karachi, Mianwali, Multan, Larkana, Gujranwala, Faisalabad (just to name a few) and of course Islamabad, have spoken so loudly that even the most avid non-believer has been forced to re-evaluate. The show of strength at IK’s jalsas coupled with the consistent show of people at Azadi square for over two months has not only been a hard slap on the face of prevailing oligarchy but has also shattered many reservations about IK’s political strategies. The nation has stated its verdict and my God, what a show it has been!

YES, it is a revolution in the making!

People belittle the movement by calling it a failure. In politics ‘success’ and ‘failure’ are relative terms determined by the media in general and our own desires in particular. But more importantly, what many people fail to understand is that this movement has gone beyond any convention. It has gone beyond a few thousand people chanting slogans outside parliament. It has gone beyond a demand for re-elections. It has gone beyond ‘go Nawaz go’. It has gone beyond all records in the history of the world. This movement has fulfilled its purpose in the purest, most vital form - It has AWAKENED us! A comatose nation has been shaken out of its deep slumber of ignorance and indifference! A race of people mentally enslaved for decades has finally felt the urge and found the courage to break the shackles! This movement HAS delivered and it has been beyond anyone’s expectations or imagination. It may not be a ‘success’ as regards to Nawaz’ resignation but that doesn’t even hold a candle to what it has already achieved. It has indeed been the greatest triumph for Pakistanis and a long-awaited cure for Pakistan!

YES, it is a revolution in the making!

And I want to thank the man behind it all. I want to thank Imran Khan. The man who made us realize our worth and the worthlessness of these thugs who rule us. The man who told us that right is more powerful then might. The man who taught us to fight for our rights. The man who showed us that truth trumps fear. The man who reminded us that we are all equal; that we are a NATION! The man who gave us back our patriotism, our courage, our dignity AND our humanity! Thank you Sir!!! This nation is forever indebted to you… Thank you.

YES, it is a revolution in the making!

And it is happening right in front of us. Whether we like it or not, whether we approve of it or not… It IS happening now. It will not happen again. Let us be a proud part of it.

My friends, history will be written one day. Let’s make sure we end up on the right side!

Pakistan Zindabad!
